The event will be at 7 p.m. in the historic “Church on the Green,” the First Reformed Church of Hackensack, 42 Court St., Hackensack.
The 2016 Awards are hosted by the Bergen County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs and Historic Preservation Advisory Board. The awards will be presented by Tedesco, members of the Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Historic Preservation Advisory Board.
Sophie Heymann, the former mayor of Closter who has shown exceptional leadership in historic preservation throughout her 17 years in office as councilwoman and mayor, will be honored at the event. Among her many historic preservation accomplishments is Closter’s Historic Preservation Ordinance, which was written, adopted and strengthened during her tenure. To date, 16 individual buildings and one historic district consisting of 28 properties have been designated by the borough.
Since 1982, more than 280 awards have been presented to members of the local community in honor of outstanding historic preservation achievements by individuals, students, organizations and businesses. These awards were created to encourage preservation, restoration and adaptive use of Bergen County’s valuable and irreplaceable historic buildings, houses, schools, houses of worship, cemeteries and other historic sites.
