Temple Beth-El In Closter Organizes Seminar On Death, Mourning

CLOSTER, N.J. -- Temple Beth El of Northern Valley will have a "Temple University Session" on Jewish views on death and mourning at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

This program will be presented by Martin Kasdan, funeral director at Gutterman and Musicant in Hackensack.

Are there practices or traditions at a Jewish funeral that you might have seen or heard but couldn’t make sense of? Where does the tradition of tearing clothes or wearing a black ribbon come from? How long should a family sit shiva, and why? Is there a reason for putting a stone on the monument at a grave? All these questions and more will be delved into during an enlightening discussion about the myths, mysteries and fears about death and mourning.
