Martin Kasdan, funeral director at Gutterman and Musicant in Hackensack, will lead the discussion.
Are there practices or traditions at a Jewish funeral that you might have seen or heard but couldn't make sense of? Where does the tradition of tearing clothes or wearing a black ribbon come from? How long should a family sit shiva -- and why? Is there a reason for putting a stone on the monument at a grave?
These questions and more will be delved into during this discussion about the myths, mysteries and fears about death and mourning. Light refreshments will be served at this program, which is sponsored by the Adult Education Committee of Temple Beth El.
RSVP by calling the Temple Beth El Office at 201 768-5112 or emailing office@tbenv.org.
The session will begin at 7:30 p.m. The temple is located at 221 Schraalenburgh Rd., in Closter. For more information about the temple, visit its website.
