For nine months prior to World War II, in an act of mercy unequalled anywhere else before the war, Britain conducted an extraordinary rescue mission, opening its doors to more than 10,000 Jewish and other children from Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia.

These children, or kinder, as they came to be known, were taken into foster homes and hostels in Britain, expecting eventually to be reunited with their parents. The majority of them never saw their families again.

RSVP is required by Feb. 22 by calling Patsy at Temple Beth El at 201-768-5112.

Coffee and light refreshments will be served, and then lunch is optional at 12:30 p.m. at a cost of $10 per person.

Temple Beth El is at 221 Schraalenburgh Road, Closter, serving households from the entire Northern Valley and beyond.
