CLOSTER, N.J. — With 20 of 40 available retail spaces in Closter Plaza now leased, Mayor John Glidden is getting a better picture of what his new 287,000 square foot shopping center will be like.

He likes what he sees.

"From all the leases the developer has signed, the indication is that this is going to be a first class place," Glidden told Daily Voice.

Closter Plaza will be anchored by a Whole Foods, which is set to open in November. Other retailers who have recently signed leases at the 287,000 square foot shopping center.

Tenants will include HomeGoods and Kidville, Chipotle, BareBurger, Village Whiskey and Distrito.

The BowTie Cinemas in Closter Plaza will also be undergoing renovations, and Glidden said the developer is in talks with Target to open a store as well.

Glidden compares Closter Plaza to other high-profile Bergen County shopping centers, including Bergen Town Center in Paramus and the Shops At Riverside in Hackensack.

"I'd say we would rival them in terms of the high end clientele we will bring in," he said.

"The valuation of the property by virtue of these improvements is going to increase by quite a bit," Glidden said. "That will bring in more revenue for the town from property tax."

Glidden also noted the influx of shoppers coming to Closter, and how that will affect nearby downtown.

"It will have some positive impact, but just how much nobody is willing to say," he said.
