High School Swimmer ID'd As 16-Year-Old Killed In South Jersey Crash
The 16-year-old girl killed in a weekend South Jersey crash has been identified as a high school athlete. Sophia Bennett was killed in the two-car crash on Friday, March 22, at the intersection of Hurffville Road and Deptford Center Road just after 8 p.m., according to police and school officials. The vehicle that Sophia was riding in was being driven by a 17-year-old Gibbstown boy, who was seriously injured, police said at the time of the crash. A former high school rugby star from Basking Ridge leaped to his death from a landmark structure at the brand-new Hudson Yards in Manhattan over the weekend, authorities confirmed. Peter DeSalvo, 19, a freshman at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, jumped to his death from the sixth story of The Vessel, 150 or so feet above West 33rd Street near the Hudson River, around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to published reports. Montville School District officials identified the 12-year-old boy who drowned at the Lake Valhalla Club as Aaron Melzer. The Lazar Middle School seventh-grader died while swimming at the private lake club Wednesday afternoon. Grief counselors will be at the Lazar Media Center on June 28 and July 1 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. "We extend our sincere condolences to Aaron’s family and friends as we keep them in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time,” Superintendent René Rovtar said on Facebook.
