NJ Techie's App Is Changing The Game For Tri-State Area Commuters
What started as a frustrating train ride home from New York City to New Jersey for one Montclair commuter in 2006 has turned into a commuting revolution. Joshua Crandall, a tech-savvy Montclair resident, had an epiphany standing on the Watchung Avenue station platform: commuters weren’t helping each other, even though they all shared the same frustrations. That moment inspired Clever Commute, a community-driven email alert system for train riders. "The zen of Clever Commute was to only report something when there was a problem," Crandall explained. "No questions, nothing if things we…

This Bergen County Smart House Only Lasted Six Days On The Market
Yet another North Jersey home has sold over its initial asking price, and it didn't last all that long on the market. This one is the home at 67 Raymond St. in Hasbrouck Heights, which listing agent Taylor Lucyk of Christie's International Real Estate Group said sold six days after it was listed. The home's prime location for New York City commuters and that fact that it's "only a few years young" and kept new by the sellers made for a sale of $1.11 million. A smart home with smart home features, the 4-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom colonial had initially been listed at just under $1.04 million. O…

Coach USA Terminates 20 NJ Transit Lines In Filing For Bankruptcy, NJT 'Exploring Every Option'
The pressure is on for NJ Transit. The company was left high and dry when Coach USA announced it would be terminating its agreement with the major transportation company, halting service to 20 of its bus routes in Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic counties come Aug. 16. The decision to do so was made amid Coach USA filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A spokesperson from NJ Transit said the company received written notice of Coach's intentions to abandon three of its five contracts in Bergen, Passaic, and Hudson counties "with a cessation of operation at the close of business" on Aug. 16. NJ Trans…

23 NY Waterway Ferries Suspended For Safety Reasons: Report
Nearly two dozen ferries out of NY Waterway's fleet of 32 that travel between New York and New Jersey were suspended by the Coast Guard for safety reasons, News 4 reported Sunday. Six of the ferries were since returned to service Sunday, but the company said the ferry service -- which crosses the Hudson River from Bergen and Hudson counties to Manhattan -- would likely experience delays during the rush hour commute Monday morning. Some ferries were expected to travel only every 20 minutes, double the normal 10 minutes, a NY Waterway spokesman said. The Coast Guard said the inspe…

Port Authority Mulling 3 New Bus Terminal Options
Officials in New York and New Jersey have narrowed down options for a new Port Authority Bus Terminal to three different plans, Politco reported Thursday. The magazine obtained a copy of a planning document prepared by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey outlining the options to revamp or replace what the agency says is the busiest bus terminal in the world. Thousands of people daily commute by bus into the terminal from New Jersey, where 12 percent of Manhattan’s workforce lives. In one scenario, the facility would be rebuilt as buses continue to use it. Under another plan,…

Snow Showers Will Be Followed By Heavy Rain, Chance Of Flooding
There could be some slick conditions during the Friday evening commute with light snow and snow showers now falling in parts of the area.Little or no accumulation is expected. A new storm system will move through the area late Saturday afternoon through Sunday night, but temperatures will be warm enough -- in the upper 40s during the day and lower 40s at night -- to ensure all rain will fall. But there will be lots of it, with up to 1-2 inches possible as the front will bring abundant moisture and waves of low pressure to the area. There is also a limited chance for minor flooding on some …

Overnight Snow Could Make For Slick Morning Commute
This story has been updated. A changeover of rain to snow overnight could make roads slick during the Friday morning commute. The chance for snow will end around 9 a.m. Friday. Skies will gradually clear with some sun in the afternoon and a high temperature struggling to reach the freezing mark.
