Cruz, whose career numbers include more than 300 regular-season receptions and 25 touchdowns as a Giant, was told of the team's decision early Monday, according to northjersey.com.
After learning of the news, the 30-year-old said that he has "a lot of good football left ahead of me," according to the team's blog, which said that Cruz hopes to catch on with another team for the 2017-2018 season.
Cruz, who ranks 10th among the Giants all-time receivers with 4,549 receiving yards, began his career as an undrafted free agent, according to the team.
While he had just three catches in his rookie year, Cruz broke out in his second season, making the Pro Bowl while catching 82 balls for 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns, according to the team.
He continued the success in his 2013 campaign, but suffered a career-altering injury the following year when he tore his patellar tendon. According to the Giants, the injury caused him to miss the team's final 10 games of 2014. A separate calf injury then forced him to miss the entire 2015 season.
Cruz returned in 2016 to catch 39 balls over 15 games for 586 yards and a touchdown, according to team. By releasing Cruz, the Giants open up several million dollars in salary cap space for the coming year, according to northjersey.com.
