The fraudulent messages falsely claim recipients are eligible for a $1,400 Economic Impact Payment and instruct them to click a deceptive link to "claim" the funds.

How The Scam Works

  • Victims receive a text message that appears to be from the IRS, stating they are owed an Economic Impact Payment.
  • The message urges them to provide personal information to process the supposed payment.
  • Scammers promise the money will be deposited into a bank account or mailed as a check within 1-2 business days.
  • A link mimicking an official IRS webpage is included—clicking it may install malware or lead to a fake form designed to steal sensitive details.

How To Stay Safe

  • The IRS does NOT initiate contact via text, phone calls, email, or social media.
  • Never click links or provide personal information in response to an unsolicited message.
  • Report suspicious IRS-related messages to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.

Taxpayers should remain vigilant and report any fraudulent communications to the proper authorities.
