The Promise: Fairness

I grew up in North Bergen, lived quite awhile in Cliffside Park and, for a brief time, on the West New York waterfront. If I know anything, it’s that this area is hip and happening, not a place where people are easily fooled. That’s why CLIFFVIEW PILOT is different from anything you’ve ever seen.

It’s local and it’s loyal. It’s fair and it’s accurate. We have no secret affilations or hidden agendas. And there are no outsiders coming in, trying to pretend they know what our lives are like.

CLIFFVIEW PILOT won’t report assumptions, rumor or innuendo. I’ll never tell you I heard something from someone who heard it from someone else. Instead, you’ll get exactly what can be verified and what can’t. And you’ll get it straight — no slant.

There will be no exposes or “gotchas.” We’re too busy trying to find out what’s happening that affects OUR lives, not trying to ruin someone else’s.

There will be absolutely NO badgering of the bereaved. The only funerals we’ll cover will involve police officers, firefighters or other public servants so widely known in the community that they deserve such a tribute. Still, there will be rules: (1) We’ll keep a respectful distance; and (2) The family must OK it first. Otherwise, we ain’t goin’.

Finally, we will do all we can to find out about predators in our midst, so that our children can remain safe.

I made my bones covering cops and courts: I exposed wrongdoing, put bad guys in prison and won local and national awards for investigative reporting. I also ran a “Law & Order” team that, among its accomplishments, forced an Attorney General from office. My law enforcement contacts are everywhere. They’re bright, honest and reliable. And many of them are at the top of their respective agencies — so they know the real story.

But that’s not what’s going to make CLIFFVIEW PILOT a success.

That’s up to YOU.

When you see or hear something, email or call me. Same thing if a tip or rumor needs checking out. If you find the best pizza, the quietest hideaway or the real story on a crime that happened minutes ago, get in on the action. Join the network.

Just the same: If you’re interested in writing, shooting photos or participating in any way in the PILOT, get hold of me soon as possible. I’m looking for sharp, aggressive people who won’t be hustled. Interns are welcome, as well (I promise I’ll teach you all I know). Having a bit of an edge doesn’t hurt. Nor does being willing to set your opinions aside and see the world with “soft eyes.”

If my plan works, we’ll become a connected community, sharing stories and ideas, scoping out tips, beating everyone else to the punch. In the meantime, I’ll keep doing my job — getting the real story behind the story, nailing exclusive interviews with major figures from the area, and scooping out the kind of talent you want to check out every day.

So c‘mon in. Poke around. Kick the tires. Make us part of your life — and I promise we’ll make it worth your while.

My email box is always open. My phone: 201.943.2794.
