The 16-year-old victim was one of five people -- all from Rockland County -- who accosted Khari E. Noerdlinger, 19, of Edgewater on Old River Road around 10:30 p.m.Sunday, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.
"An altercation ensued" in which the victim was stabbed in the femoral artery in his leg, Grewal said.
The boy -- identified by police in Spring Valley as Savion Lewallen -- died overnight at Hackensack University Medical Center after being flown there by medical helicopter from Palisades General Hospital in North Bergen.
Edgewater police were called after he was brought into the hospital, Grewal said.
As a result, Noerdlinger and four other people -- all of them from Rockland County -- were arrested and charged, he said.
Noerdlinger was being held on $500,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with aggravated manslaughter, weapons possession and resisting arrest.
Charged with various armed robbery and conspiracy counts were Kevensky Lubin, 28, Richard Jean-Pierre, 18, and Calim Gaspard, 23, all of Spring Valley, and Mirleny Tremols, 33, of Nyack. They were being held on $750,000 bail each.
The 6-foot-1-inch, 160-pound Noerdlinger created problems for his mother, Rachel, after he was arrested on trespassing charges with two friends who police said were carrying marijuana in upper Manhattan in November 2014.
Three months earlier, he'd tweeted that police were "pigs always killing people."
Records show that Noerdlinger -- who played linebacker for the Leonia/Palisades Park football team -- also was taken into custody in New York City in 2011 in connection with the robbery of a $50 pair of headphones, records show. He was classified as a youthful offender and not charged with a crime.
Rachel Noerdlinger ended up resigning her post amid reports about him and an ex-boyfriend who'd previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and cocaine possession in a shooting death.
The Edgewater incident follows a double-murder suicide by a local man who shot himself, his wife and his daughter at the The Windsor at Mariners Tower a short distance north in Edgewater a little over a month ago.
It was Bergen's second homicide of the year -- and second in four days -- following what authorities said was the beating death of a North Arlington woman by her husband in their home on Friday.
