Longtime Secaucus tax collector Alan Bartolozzi was already facing charges that he stole $4,150 from a municipal employee union when he turned himself in on cocaine possession charges, authorities said. Bartolozzi, 57, who had been the municipal tax collector for 24 years, posted an increased bail following a court appearance, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.
Bartolozzi is awaiting trial after being charged last month with taking thousands from the Secaucus Public Employees Association while union treasurer from September 2006 to January 2007.
Municipal officials suspended him in May after finding coke at his work station. Once a positive test was returned on the drug last week, Bartolozzi was given the opportunity to surrender.
