People exiting the subway station near Watts Street around 8:30 p.m. alerted Officer James Dunphy to the commotion below, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said.

Dunphy spotted the man carrying the sword in its sheath and followed him to Barclay and Church streets, where he quickly disarmed him, Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

No one was hurt, he said.

The man, identified as 51-year-old Orlando Lassiter, was charged with weapons possession and disordery conduct.
