UPDATE: The fundraiser was a huge success: Dumont’s Toni Marie Geiger aims for Olympic medal.

Geiger has been competing locally and internationally to qualify for the 2012 Summer Games, to be held in London. But because U.S. athletes don’t receive government funding — unlike their counterparts elsewhere — the two-time New Jersey state champion has to raise the money she needs to train, travel and compete herself.
“My competing nationally and internationally has been an experience of a lifetime,” Geiger said. “My recent accomplishments have been winning bronze in the Pan American Team Championships in El Salvador as well as the Finnish Open in Vannta, Finland.”
She has been attending international Olympic qualifying events hosted in countries ranging from Brazil to Bulgaria.
“As you can imagine, huge costs accrue from my participation,” Geiger said.
