No. 2 federal prosecutor in NJ a familiar face

When federal authorities prosecuted those responsible for the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, J. Gilmer Childers was the lead prosecutor. Same for when they brought the hammer down on the five infamous “Mafia Commission” family heads.

In what essentially was an open secret, New Jersey’s top federal prosecutor named “Gil” Childers his No. 2 in command.

Childers, a lifelong New Jersey resident, was deputy chief of the criminal division in New York’s Southern District of New York from 1987-1997. He’s been with Goldman Saks the past decade.

“Gil has extraordinary experience as a prosecutor and he has an unparalleled reputation for his great judgment and integrity,” said Paul Fishman, who succeeded Gov. Chris Christie as the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey. “I am delighted that he was willing to return to the Department of Justice as my primary advisor.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity to return to public service and very excited about working in an office I have always admired,” Childers said. “To be able to serve my country in this capacity, in this office, and in my home state is a humbling honor.”

Childers graduated from Trinity College in 1977 and from Boston College Law School in 1981. Following his graduation from law school, he began work as an Assistant District Attorney in the Office of the Kings County (Brooklyn) District Attorney.
