One of the thieves came to the front door of the East Place home yesterday saying he needed to come inside to check the water, Lt. Robert Salerno said.

After walking the homeowner to the kitchen “in an attempt to show him discolored water,” the bandit unlocked the back door to let the three others, Salerno said.

The group had split up when the target began asking questions, the lieutenant said.

“At that point, he told them to get out of the house and that he was going to call the police,” he said. “That scared them off.”

Three of them ran out the back door and the fourth out the front, the man told police.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to call Lodi detectives: (973) 473 – 7600.

Meanwhile, Salerno reminded citizens to always seek absolute proof of identification from anyone who comes to your house.

You can also ask the person to wait while you call the particular utility or agency. A thief will run away.

Or you can call your local police department, Salerno said.

But don’t hesitate: Do it right away. That will increase the odds of stopping a criminal from hurting you or anyone else.
