Michael A. Sampson, 42, was charged with murdering Hector “Tito” Zabala, 33, not far from the Boom Bar on Anderson Avenue, according to the Asbury Park Press.com.
Sampson had argued that he shot Zabala in self-defense after seeing a weapon but nothing was found on the victim's body or at the scene, according to the Asbury Park Press.com.
The two didn't know each other but Sampson didn't like the way Zabala was talking to his wife, Jacqueline Pierro, while at the bar, the Daily Voice reported in January.
Sampson and Pierro were originally both charged in connection with the shooting death of Zabala, the Daily Voice reported.
Pierro pleaded guilty to hindering and agreed to testify against her husband.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 3, according to the Asbury Park Press.com.
