Alberto S. Mendez (MUGSHOT: Bogota PD)
The woman had gotten a restraining order against 21-year-old Alberto S. Mendez of Manhattan for threatening her, but when she came home around 9 o’clock, she told police, she spotted him running through her backyard.
Rather than go inside, she called police.
Sgt. Daniel Maye and Officers Victor Negron and Jon Gallipoli arrived and spotted him in the kitchen.
Mendez apparently climbed in a second-floor window, took some of his ex-girlfriend’s things and stashed them outside the house, Detective Geoffrey Cole told CLIFFVIEW PILOT tonight.
The officers got hold of Mendez, but he wasn’t going quietly – breaking the rear window of the police cruiser, the detective said.
Cole quickly determined that Mendez was wanted for a parole violation out of the city, which brought a charge of being a fugitive from justice. Bogota officers also charged him with making terroristic threats, burglary, theft and criminal mischief, as well as with having a small amount of marijuana.
Mendez will remain in the Bergen County Jail until an extradition hearing can be held. Bail for the Bogota charges is $15,000.
