Feds Help Cliffside Park Police Catch Wanted Ex-Con In Paterson

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. -- Cliffside Park police charged a Paterson parolee with assaulting a borough relative and stealing his car after they tracked him down with help from city police, the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force and the state Parole Division.

Officers responding to a 911 call found the bleeding 55-year-old victim on the floor of his home at 1:10 a.m. Nov. 22, Police Chief Richard Gaito said Tuesday.

He was admitted to the ICU Unit of Hackensack University Medical Center with head trauma and a puncture wound and eventually recovered, Gaito said.

Authorities immediately began searching for ex-con Jerel Gray, 46, who'd taken the victim's car, the chief said. Gray has a criminal history stretching back 20 years in New Jersey and elsewhere, records show.

Paterson police found the car. Gray then was tracked down.

He was being held on $300,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with robbery, aggravated assault and illegal weapons possession counts -- as well as a parole violation.

As a result of the violation, the state Parole Board issued a warrant requiring that Gray remain held even if he makes bail.
