A call of a gas leak brought the police to an Edgewater Road duplex right next to a liquor store, a short walk from the A&P and Macagna’s Funeral Home on nearby Anderson Avenue.
What a neighbor actually smelled was lighter fluid being used to remove patient labels from the stolen medications, Fairview Detective Sgt. Vincent Bellucci said. Police also found area distribution lists for moving the drugs.
Two of four people taken into custody are local — Edison C. Rosario, 24, of Fairview, who lives in the apartment, and Rudy M. Gonzalez, 37, who lives directly across Gorge Road from a Cliffside Park bus stop into Manhattan. The other two, Jose Batista, 23, and a 17-year-old juvenile, both have New York City addresses.
The adults are being held on $200,000 bail each at the Bergen County Jail, with court dates set for Wednesday. The teen is at the Bergen County juvenile detention facility in Paramus.
Meanwhile, Fairview police are sharing the information with several agencies hoping to get to the bottom of the massive theft — among them, the FDA/ Office of Criminal Investigations, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, New York State Attorney General Office Medicaid Fraud Unit, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Cliffside Park Police Department and the New York City Police Department.
