The victim had ducked into an Anderson Avenue bakery at 6:15 a.m. when Henry Bermeo Cuzco, 23, "jumped into the vehicle to steal some goods," Deputy Police Chief Martin Kahn said.

An employee alerted the crossing guard, who was thrown to the ground when he confronted Cuzco, Kahn said.

The victim ran back into the bakery seeking help and was followed and pushed over a table, he added.

Responding officers grabbed Cuzco, who'd taken $200 in cash after emptying the contents of the crossing guard's wallet, Kahn said.

Cuzco had $468.54 on him, including two hundred-dollar bills, he said.

Cuzco was being held on $50,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with burglary and robbery.
