Fairview ATV chase ends after officer jumps out of way

ANOTHER CLIFFVIEW PILOT SCOOP: A Fairview detective jumped out of the way of an ATV headed straight for him during a chase through the side streets of town following a hit-and-run accident that led to the eventual arrest of a 22-year-old Cliffside Park man.

Joining in last night’s pursuit, Detective Joseph Bucco drove to the 300 block of 4th Street, got out of his car and ordered the driver to stop.

Instead, the man “sped up and aimed the ATV at Detective Bucco,” Police Chief Frank DelVecchio said.

Bucco leapt out of the way and resumed the chase, but police broke off the pursuit out of concern that an innocent bystander could be hurt.

Police, knowing their suspect, found him hiding in the bathroom of a Bergen Boulevard business a few hours later, Del Vecchio said.

Ahmad D. Khalil was released on $25,000 bail pending a Municipal Court hearing this afternoon on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer by physical menace and eluding police.

Del Vecchio said the trouble began with a hit-and-run accident at Walker and 4th. Witnesses told responding Officer Robert Sabatino that an ATV hit a car and took off, and Sabatino immediately broadcast a description of the driver and vehicle, the chief said.
