Alexander Suarez is the stepbrother of Adonis Sepulveda, 31, who, along with 26-year-old Ramona Mercado Vasquez, were first arrested a day after the Nov. 26 overnight robbery at the St. Moritz, which Daibes built and lives in.
The bandits broke Daibes’ ribs while taking $2 million in cash, gold and jewelry — all of which was recovered — during what became a nearly three-hour ordeal.
Authorities who brought Sepulveda and Vasquez into court a day later said at the time that they were seeking two more suspects.
One of them turned out to be Suarez, who was picked up by detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office two weeks later, on Dec. 11, and processed without publicity.
In fact, even though he was being held on $1 million bail in the Bergen County Jail, Suarez’s information — charges, bail, etc. — still couldn’t be publicly accessed this afternoon.
It was after Suarez was arrested that detectives drew closer to their fourth suspect. Then, last Thursday, the Boston Police Fugitive Unit and U.S. Marshal’s Service nabbed 46-year-old Jorge Valencia in Massachusetts.
A news release following that arrest identified Suarez publicly for the first time.
Suarez directly participated in the robbery, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that morning.
Like the other three held in connection with the crime, he is also charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, threatening bodily injury during a theft, theft, two illegal weapons possession counts, conspiracy to commit robbery and hindering.
Unlike them, he lives on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. Sepulveda, Vasquez and Valencia, like Daibes, live in the St. Moritz off Gorge Road.
Defense attorneys say that Sepulveda and Vasquez were set up by building employees — and that there is a fifth, unidentified suspect that authorities were searching for.
