The incident began when Officer Benjamin Fox stopped a 2012 Chrysler near Midland Avenue around 2:10 this morning.

After determining the driver may be drunk, Fox asked him to get out of the car. But the man — identified as 25-year-old Alain Martinez of Cliffside Park “became uncooperative and combative,” Paramus Police Lt. John Scully said this morning.

A passenger, later identified as Edwin Lopez-Rodriguez, 28, of Paramus (MUGSHOT above), got out — carrying both the knife and pills, Scully said.

Both were arrested by Fox and Officers Nick Luciano, Jonathan Henderson and Kurtis Massey — Martinez on charges of driving while intoxicated and disorderly conduct, and Lopez-Rodriguez on illegal weapons and drug counts.

Both were released pending court appearances.
