Michael Giampietro, 37, of River Edge went to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office to be officially charged with aggravated assault yesterday in connection with the March 28 incident.

He was scheduled to appear in Central Municipal Court next Thursday.

A source close to Giampietro said he and Detective Sgt. Sean Mackay were at a retirement party before the incident, which occurred near Giampietro’s home.

He said Mackay was behind Giampietro, who flung his arm and “caught [Mackay] in the jaw with his elbow.”

Mackay, through a colleague, told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that he was hit with a fist.

Giampietro, whose record as an officer is spotless, is being represented by defense attorney Robert Galantucci.
