Cliffside Park homes evacuated after woman finds ‘pineapple’ grenade in snowbank

ONLY ON CVP: A novelty-type grenade that authorities said a passerby found frozen on a Cliffside Park snowbank last night wasn’t live, but several nearby homes and businesses were evacuated as a precaution.

The World War II-era Mk 2 “pineapple” had a fuse and a spoon trigger device but apparently “had been hollowed out, almost like a novelty-type grenade,” Bergen County Police Sgt. John Paletto told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

“It didn’t appear modified or filled in any way,” he said.

The Bergen County Bomb Squad responded, took custody of the grenade (facsimile above) and stored it after a woman found it near the corner of Palisade Avenue and Edgewater Road around 9 p.m.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification also responded, along with borough police.
