The Washington Avenue homeowner called police at 6 a.m. Wednesday after interrupting the attacks and chasing the intruder out the front door, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli and Cliffside Park Police Chief Donald Keane said today.

“At that time, a passerby in a motor vehicle heard the homeowner screaming to stop” the assailant and ran after him, both men said in a release. Others on the block, seeing what was happening, joined in.

The attacker headed west, turned south on Grove Street and then bolted into a backyard at the corner of Lincoln Avenue before vanishing (see map).

Both victims were medically evaluated, treated and released.

Cliffside Park Police are also investigating attempted break-ins in the same neighborhood — the 300 blocks of Washington and Lincoln avenues — moments before the reported incident.
