Citizen helps Cliffside Park police stop break-in attempts

EXCLUSIVE: Thanks to an alert resident, Cliffside Park police grabbed two men they said were trying to break into homes on Crescent Avenue. The 36-year-old woman called just after 1 p.m. Monday, Police Chief Donald Keane told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

“Two men rang a doorbell on Crescent Avenue, then went around back and attempted to force entry into the home,” Keane said.

Officers rushed to the block and found two suspects a short distance away after they tried breaking into another home, the chief said. Both are from North Bergen.

One of them, 36-year-old Armando Garcia, is wanted on outstanding warrants out of Union City and Jersey City. He’s being held on $10,000 bail at the Bergen County Jail in connection with the Cliffside Park incidents, along with detainers out of Hudson County.

The other, Mark Polo, 31, is also being held on $10,000 bail.

Both are charged with criminal attempt to commit burglary and possession of a burglary tool — a screwdriver.

“The citizens and officers did a great job,” Keane told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “This is how we work together to protect our community.”
