Fire Chief Anthony Amato was angry the morning of Oct. 15 after finding the ripped-up grassy area surrounding the Fireman’s Park monument at the traffic circle on Kennedy Drive and 8th Street.
Two weeks later, it happened again.
“We’ve had experiences in the past where motorists have accidentally driven onto the monument circle,” , Detective Capt. Martin Kahn told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “But this was on purpose and not accidental.”
How did police know?
A nearby resident keeps a surveillance camera trained on the circle, Kahn said.
He not only recorded both incidents – he got a plate number, the captain said.
Charged with criminal mischief and desecration of venerated objects is Cagdas Dolapci of Cliffside Park.
“We will not tolerate the desecration of any memorial in our town,” Del Vecchio.

“The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the men and women these monuments are dedicated to deserve to be respected,” the chief said.
Del Vecchio also had a special word of thanks for the good Samaritan who keeps watch over the neighborhood.
“Residents remaining vigilant and alert keep our community safer,” he said.
Dolapci is due in Municipal Court Wednesday afternoon.
