Serge Forget would have said that this morning. He’d say it most days, in fact. It was his version of “Be careful.”

Serge, who attended grade school at Epiphany Church with me when we were growing in Cliffside Park, died two Sundays ago — a day after driving me to the church so that I could get the best vantage point to take photos for CLIFFVIEW PILOT of Officer Michael Petruzzello’s funeral. He was 58.

Serge, who was born in Canada and came with his family to Cliffside Park in fourth grade, was the first friend I made at Epiphany. We remained friends for the rest of his life. He often took me on photo assignments when I needed it. His nickname for me was “Chardo.”

Serge was pretty much a private person. He never married. Family and friends always came first. So did his country: As an adult, Serge became a U.S. citizen.

It’s telling that, as part of the NJ Sharing Network, Serge directed that his organs be donated.

His loss is deeply felt by his friends, as well as by his mother, two brothers and four nieces.

Serge touched many people’s lives.

His generosity and good nature will be missed.
