William R. Kooney, a 42-year-old former software engineer, had been free on bail stemming from a March 2015 case when investigators arrested him on new charges on Friday.

Kooney “utilized the Internet to view, possess, and attempt to distribute an image of child sexual exploitation,” Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said Sunday after members of his Cyber Crimes Unit executed search warrants at Kooney’s Central Avenue home and a Teaneck location on Farrant Terrace that he used.

Kooney is charged with child endangerment and attempted child endangerment pending an Oct. 18 first appearance in Central Municipal Court in Hackensack.

Kooney had been free on $900,000 bail after authorities in March 2015 charged that he “engaged in inappropriate sexual activity” with several children ranging from 3 to 9 years old.

He was registered in 2009 as a Megan’s Law offender for sexually assaulting a Passaic County girl under 13 and possessing child pornography.

Grewal thanked police from Teaneck and Bogota, as well as the FBI Newark Field Office K-9 Unit, for their work on the current case. Assigned to his Cyber Crimes Task Force and assisting with the investigation were police from Saddle River, Oradell, Carlstadt and Bogota, the prosecutor said.
