As a member of the New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking, the council has worked in the past to let people know about the program. The group hosted a forum in 2013 right before the Super Bowl, and security was increased at the event to prevent trafficking, organizers said.
The problem still exists on a large scale, council members said. The industry generates an estimated $35 billion per year and puts an estimated 244,000 American children at risk of child sexual exploitation.
Council members said they will continue to work to raise awareness, particularly since the many Bergen County malls are considered "hunting grounds" for traffickers looking for children.
