Wildfire Wharton State Forest Shamong Firefighters were working to contain a 300-acre wildfire burning at Wharton State Forest in Burlington and Camden counties on Wednesday, April 24, authorities said. The fire was about 40 percent contained along Jackson Road in Shamong, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service as of 3 p.m. The Forest Fire Service has responded to the wildfire with ground crews and an observation helicopter. Crews are utilizing a backfire operation to burn fuel ahead of the main body of fire which will help aid containment efforts, state forest fire officials said. Driver Killed In Crash With Pickup Truck In South Jersey An 84-year-old man was killed when his car was hit by a pickup truck in Burlington County, authorities said. Rodger Carney of Medford was turning left from westbound Tuckerton Road onto Marquette Drive when a pickup truck traveling east struck his vehicle at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Medford police said. The pickup truck was driven by Gregory Girard, 40, of Shamong, who suffered a minor injury, police said. Carney was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in Camden where he was pronounced dead. No charges had been filed in the crash which remained under investigation.
