Widespread Snowfall Expected Soon: What To Know Now

A new storm system is forecast to bring snow to the Northeast, adding to disruptions caused by a massive cross-country winter storm that swept through the region earlier this week.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall is expected from overnight Friday, Jan. 10, into Saturday, Jan. 11.

While specific accumulation amounts are still uncertain, the system is anticipated to have a wide impact, stretching from Massachusetts to North Carolina.

This setup involves a wave of cold air, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 25 degrees below average through Sunday, Jan. 12. (See image above from AccuWeather.)

Lake-effect snow is also possible from Tuesday, Jan. 7, through Thursday, Jan. 9, in shaded areas shown in the second image.

Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing across much of the region until Sunday, Jan. 12.

"Prolonged heating demand, frozen pipes, dangerously low AccuWeather RealFeel Temperatures, and power outages are all possible this week," warned AccuWeather Meteorologist Alex Duffus.
