Pockets Of West Nile Virus Reported In Sussex County
Pockets of West Nile Virus were reported this week in Sussex County, officials said. Officials in Hampton Township on Aug. 17 confirmed West Nile Virus (WNV) in its adult mosquito population. Four days later, Sussex County officials said its mosquito control division was working to "steadily to neutralize pockets of virus activity detected in the county." First NJ Case Of West Nile Virus Detected In Camden County
A Camden County resident who tested positive for West Nile virus is the first person in New Jersey to come down with the mosquito-borne illness this year, authorities said. There have been 69 cases in 16 states nationwide with the most in Arizona, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. A Winslow Township resident contracted the virus, according to the Camden County Department of Health, which said it learned of the positive test on July 17 and launched an investigation. 3 Cases Of West Nile Virus Reported In These NJ Counties
New Jersey has its first cases of West Nile Virus of the year, the state's health department confirmed. Three men tested positive for the virus in Bergen, Morris, and Ocean counties. Two are in their 50s, one is in his 80s, and all were hospitalized. Two were recovering at home and one remains hospitalized. WNV has also been detected in 293 mosquito pools and a red-tailed hawk this year in New Jersey. No cases of WNV have been reported in horses in 2022. A New Jersey man died of West Nile Virus last month, health officials confirmed. The 60-something-year-old Camden County man was admitted to a hospital on July 16 with symptoms consistent with WNV. He was discharged following treatment to a sub-acute care center, where he died, officials said. A New Jersey man has been infected with a rare mosquito-borne virus, state health officials confirmed Wednesday. A Sussex County man in his 60s started suffering a fever and various neurological symptoms in May and later tested positive for the Jamestown Canyon virus, marking the state’s first detection of a mosquito-borne disease this year. A popular longtime Little League baseball coach from Lodi died of the West Nile virus over the weekend -- the first in New Jersey this year. Fred J. Maikisch, 62, was diagnosed a little over a week earlier, loved ones said. He remained on a respirator in intensive care, but the virus “caused such severe damage” to his vital organsthat there was “no hope for recovery,” his sister-in-law said. He died Saturday. Health Department Confirms Two Cases Of West Nile Virus In Bergen County
Two human cases of West Nile Virus of the nine in New Jersey have been confirmed in Bergen County by the state's health department. The state did not specify where in Bergen County the infections occurred. Of the 767 mosquito pools tested positive for WNV, 103 are from Bergen County -- making it the area with the highest number of WNV-positive mosquitos in the state. There are no reported cases of human WNV in Passaic County, where only seven pools tested positive. Last year, there were 81 positive pools in Bergen County -- 88 the year before, data shows.

The first human case of West Nile virus in New Jersey was recently reported recently in Monmouth County and two other suspected cases are being investigated, according to the health department's most recent surveillance report.
