Head Injury Victim Who Fell Down Ramapo Reservation Ravine Airlifted To Hospital
A medical chopper was called for a 61-year-old hiker from Mahwah who responders said was seriously injured when he fell down a ravine at the Ramapo Reservation early Wednesday evening. The hiker was on a trail when "he lost his balance and fell back into a ravine, striking his head on a rock," Sgt. Michael Blondin said. Police officers found the man bleeding profusely from the head, Blondin said. He was conscious when Mahwah EMS put him into the ambulance, the sergeant said. Dive Teams Try To Retrieve Man's Body From Passaic River
Authorities Monday morning were resuming efforts to retrieve a body in the Passaic River between Wallington and Passaic. It was immediately unclear whether it could possibly be a man who Garfield police were told jumped from a bridge over the river the night before. Members of the Wallington Fire Department Emergency Squad were out on a drill Sunday when a sonar camera spotted what they later said appeared to be a body. UPDATE: A search-and-rescue team that numbered in the dozens on Saturday found a 34-year-old Hopatcong man whose wife reported him missing the night before. Kevin Fawthrop was hospitalized for hypothermia after members of the Ramapo Search and Rescue Team and co-workers from Blue Diamond Waste Removal found him in a heavily wooded area about a mile and a half from his home, responders said. Responders from various agencies braved the elements to rescue three people – at least one of whom was reportedly drunk – from the Palisades before dawn Saturday. The Closter Volunteer Ambulance and Rescue Corps, Alpine firefighters and Palisades Interstate Parkway police fought icy conditions to get the trio safely off the cliffs near the State Line Lookout in Alpine, near the Rockland County border, just after midnight. Searchers Recover Body Of Hackensack Swimmer Who Drowned In River
Searchers Tuesday afternoon recovered the body of Jose Cortez from the Hackensack River, whose friends told police he drowned while trying to swim across to Bogota. The 39-year-old's body was recovered from behind the Costco just before 3 p.m. -- 48 hours after he went under -- and was being removed. Authorities continued to search the Hackensack River Monday afternoon for the body of a 39-year-old man whose friends told police drowned while trying to swim across to Bogota. West Milford police on Wednesday confirmed that a body found in the township over the weekend was that of a 29-year-old woman who went missing after a crash nearby.
