: Wind-Whipped Paterson Fire On Eve Of Mother's Day Burns 59 Residents Out Of Their Homes
High winds whipped a roaring fire that tore through a Paterson neighborhood Saturday night, destroying five houses, severely damaging a sixth and displacing 59 residents. No injuries were reported in the Beech Street blaze, city Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale said. The Red Cross provided temporary shelter, food and clothing to the displaced. Fire officials who responded to the fire around 8:45 p.m. immediately called in a second alarm. Authorities: Trucker Charged With Setting Pit Bull On Police In Ringwood Dies Of Seizure
UPDATE: A Florida tractor-trailer driver who was arrested after authorities said he set his pit bull loose on police during a traffic stop in Ringwood died after suffering an apparent seizure. John Baker, 54, suffered the seizure in the Passaic County Jail's intake unit Tuesday night, said Bill Maer, the spokesman for Sheriff Richard H. Bernik. Baker was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a little over an hour after the 10:08 p.m. call, he said. The cause of death was being investigated. A Passaic County man who'd been chatting online with a Sussex County juvenile was found Wednesday with child porn, authorities said. Dogs, Cats Flee, Rabbit Dies In Pre-Dawn Haskell House Fire
Two dogs and two cats made it out safely, although a rabbit died in a destructive pre-dawn home fire Monday just off Rainbow Lake in Wanaque. Firefighters by 5 a.m. had contained the blaze to a second-floor bedroom and part of the attic in the 77-year-old, 1,740-square-foot Lakeside Avenue home.
