Paterson Detectives Seize Guns In Separate Street Arrests
Paterson street-crime detectives seized guns from two 20-year-old men in separate arrests a little over five hours apart. Detectives Anthony Nestico and Ismael Kivanc found the first handgun and played prominent roles in seizing the second, Police Director Jerry Speziale said. Nestico and Kivanc immediately smelled pot after pulling over a black Ford Taurus in the 700 block of East 19th Street for equipment violations just after 7 p.m. Thursday, Speziale said. An ex-con drug dealer tossed a stolen handgun during a foot chase and was nabbed trying to scale a backyard fence, Paterson police said. Responding to the 2:50 p.m. gun call at Rosa Parks Boulevard and Hamilton Avenue were Officer Ernest Lemay, Detective Michael Quinones and county prosecutor’s Detective Ricardo Ferreira of the Special Investigations Division Ceasefire Unit. A gun fell from one suspect’s waistband while another tried throwing his away during a Paterson police chase that ended with both in custody, authorities said. The city’s Shotspotter gunfire detection system brought detectives of the Special Investigations Division Street Crime Unit to Straight and Fulton streets around 1:20 a.m. Friday, Police Director Jerry Speziale said. A tragedy was averted when a fleeing suspect pulled a gun from his waistband while being chased down the street by two Paterson police officers – and then tossed it over a railing, authorities said. Joseph Nieves, 20, kept running but eventually was chased down by the officers who, just moments before, drew their weapons.
