Judge Denies Bid By Cocaine-Buying Ex-Palisades Parkway Police Chief To End His Probation
A disgraced former Palisades Interstate Parkway Police chief who avoided prison after he was caught buying cocaine online lost a bid Friday to have his one-year probation cut in half. An attorney for Michael Coppola told a state judge in Hackensack that his client needs to be able to freely go to and from his Ohio-based job and out-of-state interviews without court-ordered restrictions. Prosecutor: Embattled Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Chief Bought Cocaine Online
The embattled chief of the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police was arrested when he showed up to collect a package that he thought was online-purchased cocaine, authorities said. Investigators placed the imitation cocaine in the post office box of 43-year-old Michael Coppola, then stopped his car on Route 80 in Ridgefield Park and arrested him after he picked it up, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo said. Prosecutor Finds Rampant Violations: Palisades Parkway PD Chief Suspended
The chief of the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department was suspended for 90 days and will likely have to attend management training courses when he returns, according to a scathing report from Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo's office that uncovered a host of violations -- many that fell short of being criminal. UPDATE: A Good Samaritan stopped and pulled a 69-year-old man from his burning car after it crashed into a tree off the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Alpine early Thursday night, but the victim was later pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
