NJ Town's Police Chief Refuses To Leave Residents Behind In Assuming Statewide Leadership Role
John Russo never intended on becoming a police chief. He was going for an FBI agent, but while growing up in Rutherford and meeting his friends' parents and coaches who were police officers, he decided to switch gears. Twenty-six years into his law enforcement career, and 11 years in his role as Rutherford Police Chief, Russo has been sworn in to a one-year term as the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police's 109th president. Boy Seized With BB Gun At Rutherford HS Playoff Game
A 17-year-old boy who apparently thought it was a good idea to bring a BB gun to Rutherford High School's state playoff game against visiting Hanover Park was quickly taken into custody, authorities said. The Friday night lights made it easy for a concerned citizen to see the weapon, which the boy pulled from his waistband to show other fans near the end of the Nov. 3 game, Rutherford Police Chief John Russo said. Benches cleared and fans ran onto the field during a brawl that canceled the varsity football game Saturday between St. Mary and Harrison high schools in Rutherford before halftime. Motorcyclist Killed Exiting Route 3
A 53-year-old motorcyclist died in a crash while exiting Route 3 in Rutherford, responders said. The borough resident was leaving the westbound highway when the crash occurred at the Ridge Road exit shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday, Police Chief John Russo said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the chief said.

Motorized Bicycle Rider, 64, Seriously Injured In Rutherford Crash
A 64-year-old Rutherford man was hospitalized with serious injuries after he was struck on a motorized bicycle Thursday afternoon, authorities said. A 62-year-old male driver hit the victim in a borough crosswalk while turning at West Passaic and Mortimer avenues shortly before 5 p.m., Police Chief John Russo said. The victim was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with significant lower leg injuries that Russo said weren't considered life-threatening. Borough firefighters cleaned up a fuel spill, the chief noted. The driver was cited for failing to stop, he said.
