Driver, 26, Killed In Fiery Turnpike Toll Plaza Crash In Bergen County
A 26-year-old driver was killed in a crash on the New Jersey Turnpike overnight, authorities said. The Summit driver was heading west in a Toyota on the highway's Interchange 16W exit when he struck the toll plaza concrete abutment and overturned around 3:45 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 21 in East Rutherford, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Charles Marchan said. It happened near milepost 112.7, where the vehicle erupted in flames, Marchan said. The driver died as a result of the crash, which remains under investigation.

Fate Of $49.2 Bond — With $29M Option — For Becton Regional High School Determined By Taxpayers
One growing Bergen County high school is proposing a $49.2 million bond that would fund new construction and renovations, two years after a $55 million proposal was shot down by voters. Becton Regional High School serves students from East Rutherford, Carlstadt, and Maywood. Residents of East Rutherford and Carlstadt will vote on the proposed bond on March 12. Maywood, who in 2020 for the first time sent 340 of its students to BRHS, will not be voting but will contribute financially through its tuition contract if the bond is approved. Dumpster Fire Doused At Avalon Apartments In Wood-Ridge
A building manager kept a trash bin fire in the basement of a Wood-Ridge apartment complex from spreading and borough responders took it from there, authorities said. Wood-Ridge Lt. Jeffrey Geisler and Officers Joseph Barbiera and Michael Donato evacuated the building at the Avalon at Westmount Station apartments shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, Capt. In nothing short of a miracle, no serious injuries were reported after a gas tanker truck exploded into a huge fireball on Route 17 Monday morning. A used car dealership and many of its two dozen or so vehicles were destroyed in the five-alarm blaze after the truck and a passenger vehicle collided near the U-turn at the White Castle on the highway's southbound side in Hasbrouck Heights at 5:43 a.m. Jan. 8. The driver of a vehicle stolen out of Garfield crashed the car on an East Rutherford service road, bailed out and vanished into the swamps after being chased by the owner, authorities said. No injuries were reported. A smoky house fire in Passaic went to four alarms the day after Christmas. No injuries were immediately reported in the blaze, which ignited in a Van Buren Street home near Central Avenue around 11 a.m., Passaic Mayor Hector Carlos Lora said. A serial package thief from East Rutherford was at it yet again, making it no fewer than four times this year alone that he’s been busted, authorities said. Anthony Mendoza, 42, has a drug-related history of porch pirating, usually from fellow borough residents, stretching back nearly five years, records show.
