NY 'Star Trek' Fan Beams Up Legal Help In Battle Over Vanity Plate Snafu
A Long Island woman is contesting tickets issued from all over the nation tied to her distinctive "Star Trek" vanity license plates despite not having driven her car in four years, according to a new report. Beda Koorey, a 76-year-old resident of Huntington and a devoted "Star Trek" fan, believes her license plates were cloned, resulting in tickets for violations in locations she never visited, according to CBS News. She says she's even being billed for E-ZPass tolls. The plates bore the same number as the Starship Enterprise: NCC-1701. Click here to read the complete CBS News repor…

Not so fast there, toll cheats. The Port Authority Police Department of New York and New Jersey is arresting toll cheats and issuing summonses at a record pace this year, and plans on ramping up its already-intense crackdown on sly motorists in the coming months, according to a news release issued Tuesday, Aug. 6. In the first six months of 2024, the PAPD has cited more than 4,800 motorists who owe a combined total of more than $4.2 million in unpaid tolls and fees, the agency said. Data from the PAPD show that the total number of summonses issued by its officers increased by 55 percent an…

ass At Parkway Toll Plaza
Nearly 36,000 drivers were overcharged by E-ZPass at a toll plaza on the Garden State Parkway last month, officials said. Since Sept. 20, nearly every vehicle in one particular lane had been classified as a truck at the Great Egg Harbor toll plaza in Somers Point, a spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority said. Those vehicles were charged at a truck's rate: $3.92 (or $3.72 off-peak), instead of $1.96. After a little more investigation, officials found a cable tie on the gantry at the plaza had snapped. A cable was sagging and partially blocking a sensor used to determ…

What, No Ejector Seat? NJ Driver Had Bond-Like Gizmo To Duck Tolls, Police Say
VIDEO: You might've thought he was a James Bond or "Kingsman" fan after a New Jersey driver was nabbed by Port Authority police for using an electronic gizmo to evade tolls. A New Jersey State Police trooper had notified them after seeing a blackout curtain descend over the rear license plate of a white Dodge Challenger as it passed through the cashless toll gate at the Holland Tunnel earlier this month, Port Authority Spokesperson Lenis Valens said. The muscle car had no front plate, she said. A Port Authority officer spotted the driver -- identified as Mark A. Aponte, 28, of Parlin -- d…

Underuse of Delaware River bridges during the past year's coronavirus pandemic is prompting officials to increase tolls for the first time in a decade. Tolls on the bridges operated by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission will increase on April 11 and again in 2024 after commissioners voted Monday to raise them for the first time in 10 years. Commissioners cited the decline in passenger car traffic and toll revenue caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the burden of maintaining 13 toll “free” bridges with revenue from the seven toll bridges. The commission approved the toll inc…

A 12-year-old Queens boy and his 7-year-old cousin were found at a rest stop at the New Jersey/Delaware border after taking their parents' SUV on a joy ride Monday, authorities said. Surveillance footage shows the two getting inside of the family's white Range Rover after the boy got a hold of the keys around 10 a.m., the NYPD said. About an hour later, authorities used E-ZPass information and license plate readers to track the car on the Verrazano Bridge, CBS reports. At one point, New Jersey State Police troopers spotted the car -- but the boy sped off, the outlet said. SAFE AND SOU…

A man caught selling stolen E-ZPass tags hit a Port Authority police detective’s vehicle with his car as he tried to escape arrest, authorities said. Detectives chased down and captured Jayquan K. Crawford, 25, in Fort Lee after he rammed the police car in Edgewater, Port Authority spokeswoman Lenis Rodrigues said. The Port Authority’s Office of Inspector General began investigating after getting a tip earlier this year that Crawford was selling unauthorized EZ-Pass tags on Craigslist that he claimed worked at MTA, PANYNJ and NYS Thruway Authority facilities, Rodrigues said Friday. “Text c…

Ridgewood Car Owner Learns Why You Want To Turn In, Not Toss Unneeded License Plates
A Ridgewood woman was shocked when E-ZPass violations and notices from collection agencies began filling her mailbox. It seems she'd tossed a new vehicle temporary license tag in the garbage a short time earlier, village police said. Someone swiped it and put it on another car, they said. There isn’t much police can do unless the thief is still using the tag and is stopped for some reason. The Highview Terrace woman was advised to follow up with the state Motor Vehicle Commission and E-ZPass. It’s rare (and doesn't apply to temporary tags), but some New Jerseyans have had their driver’s …

Say Goodbye To Exact Change Lanes On The Garden State Parkway
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is doing away with exact change lanes at several toll plazas on the Garden State Parkway. With work set to begin Sept. 24, the lanes will be replaced with full-service or E-ZPass lanes along the mainline barrier plazas -- locally effecting Bergen and Essex counties, along with several other between Cape May and the New York State boarder. NJTA anticipates the impact to be minimal and said anyone who wants to continue using exact change will be handing their money to a toll collector instead of dropping it into a basket. Just make sure to select a full-servi…

Police: GWB Toll Cheat Had Both License Plates Taped Over
FORT LEE, N.J. -- A trucker who blew through a George Washington Bridge E-ZPass toll without paying had both license plates covered with gray tape, authorities said. A Port Authority police officer spotted the 2008 Kenworth tractor-trailer and pulled it over Sunday afternoon on the bridge's upper level, the authority's Joseph Pentangelo said. Alejandro Sanchez, 43, of Hialeah, Florida, was charged with theft of services, tampering with a public document and using the E-ZPass lane without a transponder. He was released pending a court hearing.
