Cuban Pete's Shooting Under Investigation
An argument escalated into a shooting earlier this week at Cuban Pete's in Montclair, police say. An argument inside of the Bloomfield Avenue restaurant escalated spilled onto the street turned physical between four males just after 12 a.m. Monday, Montclair Police Sgt. Terence Turner said. One male pulled out a handgun and fired three rounds, which did not strike anyone, Turner said. Three Ruger 9mm shell casings were recovered at the scene, he said. Cuban Pete's in Montclair is closed after the owner repeatedly failed to obey COVD-19 orders. Police on Monday changed the locks on the Bloomfield Avenue eatery because it was not in compliance with Gov.Phil Murphy's orders, following an overnight investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, Essex County Sheriff’s Office and Montclair Police Department, NJ.com reports. Two North Jersey restaurants were cited for violating Gov. Phil Murphy's COVID-19 orders -- one of them for the third time. Cuban Pete's in Montclair was "well in excess" of Murphy's capacity limit, which caps restaurants at 25 percent for indoor dining, NJSP Col. Patrick Callahan said. That's two strikes for Cuban Pete's. The popular Montclair restaurant was issued a violation Sunday night for serving indoor diners in violation of Gov. Phil Murphy's executive order banning just that. Cuban Pete's in Montclair was issued a violation for serving food indoors, authorities said. The popular Bloomfield Avenue eatery was one of three Executive Order violations reported over the weekend, Col. Pat Callahan of the New Jersey State Police said during Monday's COVID-19 briefing. North Jersey celebrity chef Carl Ruiz was found dead in his apartment Sunday morning, according to recent reports. Friends say the 44-year-old suffered a heart attack in his sleep.
