Former NJ Catholic School Chaplain Charged With Endangering Welfare Of Students
A priest and former chaplain of a North Jersey Catholic school was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of six students, authorities announced Thursday. Salvatore DiStefano, 61, who most recently resided at Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church New Providence, is charged with engaging in a pattern of behavior that threatened the welfare of six Oratory Preparatory School students, acting Union County Prosecutor Lyndsay V. Former Priest-Turned-Bookstore Owner From Asbury Park Charged With Having Sex With Teen
Authorities in Virginia charged a former priest and current independent bookstore co-owner from Asbury Park with having sex with a minor. Scott Asalone, 63, was arrested in Asbury Park this past weekend by Virginia State Police and New Jersey law enforcement officers, authorities said. Asalone -- an author, speaker and poet who's also worked as a consultant for private and non-profit groups -- has co-owned a bookstore on Cookman Avenue for more than a decade. The Catholic Church in New Jersey on Wednesday released a list of allegedly abusive priests. Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the archbishop of Newark, in November announced there would be a "complete review" of abuse allegations and establishment of a victim compensation fund and counseling program. The Paterson Diocese on Wednesday released its list of priests accused of sexual abuse but didn't identify their parishes. "You don't need to know that information," a Paterson Diocese receptionist told Daily Voice. "All that you see is what has been approved by the bishop." Most were removed from the ministry. New NJ Clergy Abuse Task Force Makes First Arrest
A massive investigation by New Jersey authorities into the sexual abuse of young boys by priests has produced its first arrest. Fr. Thomas P. Ganley, 63, of Phillipsburg remained held in Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick pending a detention hearing Friday on various sex assault counts. Ganley was a priest at St. Cecelia Church in the Iselin section of Woodbridge when he abused the youngster from 1990 through 1994, from when the boy was 14 until he was 17, authorities said. The Archbishop of Newark is hoping to give a voice to victims of sex abuse by clergymen in the Catholic church.
