'We Need More Time With Him' Says Maywood Family Fighting For Rescue Dog
The Romano family of Maywood didn't know much about Buddy when they adopted him nearly 18 months ago. The vet guessed he was around nine years old and had probably been used as a bait dog. He had a scar on his leg, a few bumps along with chipped and missing teeth. Despite whatever it was he'd been through, all Buddy wanted was love. Last week, the Romano's beloved dog took a tumble down the stairs due to a sudden drop in blood pressure. Because of the fall, Buddy suffered internal bleeding and will need his spleen removed. The family isn't ready to let their dog go. "This pup has be…

Surrendered Bergen County Shelter Puppy Receives Hundreds Of Application
Officials at the Bergen County Animal Shelter are sorting through hundreds of applications for an 11-month-old German Shepherd puppy who was surrendered by his owners. Max was surrendered to the Teterboro shelter because his owners were unable to care for him. He still has a lot to learn about the world and how it works. Because he has no training under his belt, the shelter is looking for an experienced Shepherd handler and owner, who will be able to guide the stubborn adolescent into mature adulthood. Max simply needs structure, a balanced routine and someone willing to give him their …

Bruised, Abused: Lyndhurst Pet Valu Groomer Traumatized 3 Dogs, Owner Says
A Carlstadt woman says she and her three dogs are still haunted by a trip to the groomer's at Pet Valu more than a year ago. All three dogs were returned traumatized -- with more than 20 bruises and cuts combined -- after a routine visit to the Lyndhurst store's grooming department, Andrea Maloney said. It was both sickening as well as shocking the amount of abuse and pain this person put my dogs through. A Pet Val official told Daily Voice that the groomer was an independent contractor and has since been let go from the Lyndhurst Pet Valu location. That's no comfort to Maloney, whose dogs…

: Third Dog Burned By Ridgefield Park Vet Could Be Worst Case Yet
A report of a third dog being burned by at the Ridgefield Park Animal Hospital could be the worst case yet. This time, the vet says 12-year-old Stella was burned by a heating table that had lost its sensors -- not a heating pad -- according to emails obtained by Daily Voice. The miniature Australian shepherd was burned so badly during a dental procedure on December 1, 2017 that her coat might not ever grow back, owner Shawna Early said. "The dental table that Stella acquired injury from was inspected and the manufacturer found out that the sensors had fallen off," RPAH vets Paul …

Wags To Riches: Abused Bergen Pit Bull Wins National Competition
Months ago, Buffie was living in pair -- ears scarred shut from neglect and was suffering constant, painful infections. Love and care were unknown concepts to her -- until Oakland Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge (RBARI) stepped in and turned the Paterson dog's life around. Last week, the senior pit bull won $5,000 in a national contest representing the shelter that saved her life. Buffie was one of 32 competitors in the fifth annual Tournament of Tails, a bracket-style online contest hosted by Petplan pet insurance. Buffie's winnings will go toward helping other animals like her -- silently …

Bergen Vet Accused Of Burning Second Dog In Surgery
A second owner has come forward accusing the Ridgefield Park Animal Hospital of burning his dog with a heating pad during a surgical procedure. Bobby Lombardo told Daily Voice that he asked veterinarian Paul Kim not to use the heating pad during ACL surgery on the right leg of his Rottweiler, Harley, nearly five weeks ago. When he left the hospital, he said, he made sure to check Harley's body for burns -- having heard that another dog was burned during the same procedure in December. Lombardo said he found a burn that looked identical to that dog's burns on Harley's right hip. The first …

Emaciated Boxer's Will To Live Is What Saved Her, Bergen Rescue Says
An emaciated Boxer is being treated by Ramapo Bergen Animal Rescue in Oakland. Kira was so weak when she came to the rescue she was barely able to hold her head up. "We don’t know why she is in this state of starvation and we don’t want to imagine or assume that she was just simply not fed," the rescue said. "What we do know is that Kira desperately needed help for a long time, and instead, she waited a painfully long time before she fought her way to RBARI." Kira is undergoing a comprehensive battery of tests to determine if there is an underlying medical issue causi…

Low-Maintenance Closter Dog Was Surrendered By Longtime Family
CLOSTER, N.J. -- An 8-year-old Pekingese at CLAWS in Closter is in need of a new home. Rocco was left at a shelter by his owners who no longer wanted to keep him, so the rescue took him into the group and got him his very own foster home. He took about a week to adjust and was pretty nervous at first. But now, Rocco asks for attention and is starting to play with his dog roommate. "He came to us looking like a serious little guy but now you'll catch him wagging his tail and smiling," CLAWS said. He likes to go for walks and is low maintenance. He would be best in a quieter ho…
