This year's ranking places BHS at 1098 in the nation, landing the school in the top 5 percent in the nation and top 4 percent of high schools, both public and private, in New Jersey.

BHS continues to steadily move up in rank: it rose from number 1624 in 2012 to its current rank of 1098, including moving up 224 places in the last year. The school now ranks sixth in Bergen County -- up from seventh last year -- and 38th overall in the state.

According to washingtonpost.com, "America's Most Challenging High Schools ranks schools through an index formula that's a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. A ratio of 1.000 means the school had as many tests as graduates."

The Washington Post's education columnist, Jay Mathews, has been ranking the most challenging schools in the country and the D.C. region for 18 years. There are nearly 2,300 schools on this year's list, representing about 10 percent of the nation's high schools. Also noted in the national and local tables is the percentage of students eligible for government meal subsidies -- a common benchmark for poverty -- and each school's average SAT score.

"I am extremely happy to learn about our improvement in this year's rankings," said Interim Superintendent of Schools Christopher Tully. "It is a direct tribute to the hard work that our staff and administration put in each and every day.

"They come to work each day with both a hunger and passion to motivate our students to reach higher. Our students continue to shine and set higher goals. Our district will continue to identify additional areas for improvement so that we can continue to offer rigorous programs for all of our students."
