YOU SAW IT HERE FIRST: A pair of surveillance videos show a woman stealing a tip jar from a Bergenfield bakery.
CLIFFVIEW PILOT broke the story over the weekend of the Saturday theft from La Placita Bakery and Cafe on Washington Avenue.
Employees who were shocked by the surveillance video, which show the woman snatching the jar when no one’s looking and quickly leaving. It held an estimated $200 in tips accumulated throughout the day — based on the usual Saturday amount, they said.
The 20-something woman seemed to talk with someone on her cellphone as she entered the shop carrying a big black jacket, a large black pocketbook slung over her shoulder.
“She asked what food there was but didn’t order anything,” the bake shop’s Morocha Mimada told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “When she saw the ladies that work here move away from counter, she very calmly grabbed (the jar) and put it under the jacket and walked out like nothing.
“No one could believe their eyes.”
The woman was described as in her early 20s, with short, straight black hair. She was wearing all black, with a bluish green undershirt.
“By the looks of it, she had to have done this before, as she very easily does this,” Mimada said. “Hopefully they can catch her before she does this again somewhere else.
“The women here work very hard for their money,” she added. “It’s sad to see what some young people are willing to do, risking to go to jail for a couple hundred dollars.”
