Uncle charged with severely burning 11-year-old Bergenfield boy with scalding water

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Bergenfield man is charged with attempted murder for pouring boiling water on his 11-year-old nephew, leaving him with second-degree burns over 30 percent of his body, in a self-professed attempt “to torture and kill him,” CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.

Officials at Holy Name Medical Center’s Emergency Room in Teaneck summoned police Saturday night after relatives brought the boy there, Bergenfield Captain Michael T. Carr reported.

Carr said borough officers went to both the ER and the boy’s Westside Avenue home, where they detained the boy’s uncle, 29-year-old Mohammed Saffan Rezvie, the boy’s uncle, who he said confessed to the crime.

Other family members corroborated the story, Carr told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Rezvie, who is single and on disability, has a history of mental illness, the captain said. He is being held on $750,000 bail at Bergen Regional Medical Center pending an evaluation, charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and child endangerment. The Sri Lankan also was ordered to surrender his passport.

The boy was at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston.

Bergenfield police were assisted by detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit and by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Identification, Carr said.
