Police: Garfield mom restrains, beats teen boy found with daughter

ANOTHER CVP SCOOP: A Garfield woman went after a teenaged boy with a machete and then called a female “companion” — who joined in the beating — after finding him at home with her 15-year-old daughter last night, police confirmed late this afternoon.

The women took the teen’s sneakers before finally letting him leave after the mother found him hiding in the bathroom, Garfield Police Capt. Darren Sucorowski told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The 15-year-old boy’s mother called police at 7:20 last night and then took him to the hospital, where he was treated for bruises on his arm, the captain said.

After talking to him at the hospital, police arrested the mother, Alexandra Vargas, 32, and her friend, Shaina Carter, 30, of the Bronx.

The two teens were together in the house when Vargas “came home unexpectedly,” Sucorowski said.

“The boy hid in the bathroom and was then confronted by [Vargas] who began to strike [him] on the upper chest area.

“She then retrieved a machete and blocked him from exiting the residence and smashed [his] phone with the machete,” the captain said, adding that she “refused to let the boy leave.”

She then summoned carter, who arrived sometime later and “struck the boy numerous times with a metal object on his arm.”

The boy walked home without his sneakers and told his mother what happened, he said.

Vargas and Carter are both charged with aggravated assault, illegal weapons possession and child endangerment.

In addition, Vargas is charged with criminal restraint. She was being held on $82,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail.

Carter was being held on $62,500 bail.
