UPDATE: Neither a Bergen County Bureau of Police Services officer nor the driver of a sedan were seriously injured in a crash in Englewood last night, authorities said.
Officer Oscar David Lopez, who joined the Bergen County Police Department 16 months ago, was headed to a call with his lights and siren on in the rain when the crash occurred just before 10 p.m. at West Forest Avenue and Lafayette Place, Anthony Cureton of the county Sheriff’s Office told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
The Nissan driver was identified as Trevor Smith.
Lopez, of Bergenfield, served eight years in the National Guard, including two tours of duty in Iraq, before being honorably discharged a staff sergeant in 2012. He was a chemical specialist and part of the relief efforts during Hurricane Irene, rescuing citizens.
